This year instead of just buying another heart-shaped box full of chocolates, why not make your Valentine feel really special with homemade candies. The time, effort, and love you put into making these Valentine candies is sure to impress. Both of these recipes can be made by even the most cooking challenged.

Bon Bons

What You Need:

  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 pound powdered sugar
  • 1 14 or 16-ounce. pkg. coconut
  • 1 6-ounce pkg. chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cake Parawax

How to Make It:

Combine butter, milk, sugar, and coconut; chill at least 30 minutes. Form into small balls and chill again. Melt chocolate chips and wax in a metal bowl over a pan of hot water. The wax is to help keep the chocolate firm at room temperature. Dip balls into chocolate mixture. Put on waxed paper to cool.

Bourbon Balls

What You Need:

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 4 tablespoons bourbon
  • 1 cup finely chopped pecans
  • 1 large pkg. semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon paraffin

How You Make It:

Cream butter and sugar. Add bourbon and pecans. Shape into small balls; put on waxed paper. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. Melt chocolate chips and add paraffin. Dip balls into cooled chocolate and place on waxed paper to harden.

Gift-giving Tips: Once your candy is done a pleasing arrangement is in order. One idea is to use fluted candy wrappers and neatly arrange in a decorative Valentine’s box. You may also wish to wrap individually in colored cellophane. Some roses or a stuffed bear might also add to your arrangement. Use your imagination. Your sweetheart will really appreciate the time and effort you put into your gift. Its so more thoughtful than grabbing a box of chocolates and flowers at the last minute. Let your sweetheart know how much you mean to her.
